Kakome Beach, Albania: What to Expect Before You Go

What Is Kakome Beach?

Kakome Beach sits inside Kakome Bay, a sheltered cove on Albania’s southern Ionian coast, roughly 20 km south of Saranda. It’s one of the few beaches in the region that genuinely earns the word “hidden” — there’s no road access, no beach bars, and no tourist infrastructure. Just a small pier, turquoise water, and green cliffs wrapping around the bay on all sides.

That’s exactly what makes it special.

The water inside the bay is exceptionally calm and clear, protected from open-sea wind by the surrounding hills. The seabed is rocky near the edges and sandy in the centre, making it ideal for both snorkeling and swimming.

How to Get to Kakome Beach

There is only one way to reach Kakome: by boat.

No road leads to the beach, and the surrounding terrain makes it impossible to hike in without serious effort. This is also why it stays so quiet — even in peak summer, you won’t find it overcrowded.

From Saranda, the boat ride takes roughly 45–60 minutes depending on conditions and how many stops are made along the way. Ajla Boat includes Kakome as one of seven stops on both the group tour and the private south route, with around 30 minutes at the beach. If you want more time there, the private tour gives you more flexibility over how long you stay at each destination.

What to Do at Kakome Beach

There isn’t a long list of activities — and that’s the point.

Swimming is the main draw. The water is calm, clear, and deep enough near the pier to jump in from above. Visibility underwater is strong on most days, so even basic snorkeling without a guide is worthwhile.

The pier is the social hub of the beach. It’s small, wooden, and used mainly for diving and sunbathing. If you’re arriving by boat, this is where you’ll anchor.

Exploring the bay is worth doing if you have energy after swimming. The rocky edges of the cove are interesting up close, and the green hills above give the bay a dramatic, almost fjord-like feel when viewed from the water.

What you won’t find: restaurants, sunbeds for rent, showers, or shops. Bring your own water and snacks.

Best Time to Visit Kakome Beach

June and September are the best months. The water is warm, the weather is stable, and the beach is noticeably quieter than in July and August.

Peak summer (mid-July to mid-August) is still good — the bay’s isolation keeps it less crowded than Ksamil or Saranda’s main beaches — but boats fill up faster and the sun is intense by midday.

Avoid going after heavy winds. The Ionian coast can get rough quickly, and choppy conditions make the boat ride uncomfortable and reduce water visibility.

What to Bring

  • Water and snacks — there’s nothing to buy on the beach
  • Snorkeling mask — the water is clear enough to make it worthwhile
  • Reef-safe sunscreen — the bay is a protected natural area
  • A dry bag — if you’re bringing your phone or camera on the water

Is Kakome Worth It?

Yes — but go in with the right expectations. Kakome isn’t a resort beach. There’s no shade infrastructure, no food, and no entertainment beyond the water and the scenery. If that sounds like a drawback, it’s probably not the right stop for you.

If you’re the type who’d rather swim in a deserted cove than fight for a sunbed, Kakome is one of the best beaches you’ll find anywhere on the Albanian Riviera.
